Our FTWS program has been really well recieved. In fact. probably a little too well as we encountered a bit of a problem with it in that some people wanted us to attend to so many items that just weren't related to the setup, running or management of WordPress sites and so we've decided to correct that now by making an amendement to the way that we deliver the service.

FTWS Full Technical WordPress Support is exactly what it indicates it is. It's a full service WordPress Technical support program in which we'll attend to anything at all relating to the setting up and management of WordPress sites. That includes attendance to to you WP-Admin panel and also cPanel controls and mySQL databases.

FTWS for site development: We will develop and work on any kind of WordPress site for you using your FTWS credits. That includes everything from personal blogs to corporate websites, membership websites and modules, forums, shopping and eCommerce sites, and we'll even install and configure sales pages for you using WordPress. If you need to have content inserted and edited we'll attend to that for you too. The only exception that we won't get involved with is the creation of actual sales letters, sales pages and all the mechanisms that go with that such as uploads/downloads, and thankyou pages etc.

FTWS exclusions: 

• The creation of actual sales letters, sales pages and all the mechanisms that go with that such as uploads/downloads, and thankyou pages etc.
• Anything to do with setting up of cPanels using WHM
• Anything related to the use and publication of html (non WP pages) unless it relates to an html file inclusion with a WordPress sites.
• Setting up autoresponders (such as Aweber) unless it is by request or there are special circumstances we will not provide autoresponder set up services.
• Setting up newsletters outside of WordPress (WP newsletter plugins are an exception in that we will set such plugins up)
• Graphics creation relating to any site.  We will of course insert graphics and create html links for them but the actual creation of graphics falls under a seperate service that we can provide should you be in need of headers, banners, e-covers etc. at very competitive rates.
• Creating graphs, charts, or spreadsheets for any post or page. We will of course insert any of these such items for you provided that you have created and edited them prior.

This week we introduced a new header for Webthrust.com.

You may have seen it already and then again you may not have noticed too much difference in that it is similar to the original header that we've had up for the past few months.

How important is having an individualized graphic header anyway?

I have mixed feelings about headers actually. For one, I do agree that having something that appeals to the eye is important because even if it engages the site visitor momentarily it can create a postive impression (if its a decent header) and that can encourage the visitor to read the rest of the page (above the fold) and perhaps even be the differnence between whether the visitor scrolls down the page or not (stats show that over 70% of new site visitors leave your site before scrolling down the page). Secondly I also think that many site owners completely miss the point and dont understand about headers. I've seen some terrific graphic looking headers that did little more than use up 50 to 60% of the above-the-fold screen space without offering much in return (such as no clickable banners, no optin box and so forth).

Anyway,.. back to our new header for a moment. I just felt that I'd like to use the header space (we were using 160px height before, but increased it to 200px with the new header) in a better way by creating an improved visual effect and to also presenting more of a graphical theme of what Webthrust.com is all about. Given that we're all about creating poweful CMS websites using WordPress that deliver great SEO performance and offer exceptional Web2.0 connectivity, I thought it would be worthwhile to present that to all our site visitors.

What did we change? Well we changed the logo by getting rid of the blasting rocket and replaced it with a rising arrow. We created a light grid background to provide a graph-chart effect and carried over an amplifed rendition of our logo arrow that indicates a rising performance result on a graph chart. That arrow also rises up from the text for our website name and tag line and points towards three projected website graphics from a computer screen.

In conclusion, we're very happy with it, and although we realize it could be improved, here's the thing: 1) we had limited time and limited budget for it. 2) we knew we wanted to keep it simple and wern't out to try and win any awards with it.

Personally I think that a 200px high header is about the limit I'd be willing to go to with a header that didn't take active advantage of the inherent header space. If a header design was say 300px or more high then that would be fine as long as it incorporated some kind of useful features such as clickable banners or zones or having an optin box. You could also use the header to present quotations or testimonials as we recently arranged for a client with her header at TotalPerformanceCoaching.com.au which in fact features a series of 9 rotating header banners. It is also possible to stick with a single header and just insert a javascript rotating quotes/testimonial box.

Things You Should Know About Upgrading WordPress

Recently I was contacted by a client who asked me whether there would be any issues with our Optimim WordPress (OWP) installations when upgrading plugins and newer versions of the WP platform.

Here's the response below that I gave him,.. it's a good question so I thought it was worth sharing.

"There won't be any issues upgrading after OWP is installed.

As new plugin upgrades occur just go ahead and upgrade them. If after upgrading a new plugin your site misbehaves then its a matter of deactivating the latest plugins upgraded and assessing which one caused a problem. It won't affect you overall installation.

When a new version of WP comes out then its a matter of backing up all WP files and the database before upgrading. Usually there's no problem but if there was then you have your backup to reinstate the previous installation and work from there. Actually I have never encountered an adverse situation when upgrading to the latest version of WP, but it pays to be on the safe side."

I used to take an hour and I know some people spend an entire afternoon on backing up!).
